Laymans' Song

from Landmine by The Post-Timey String Band

/

lyrics

I could feel the floor a’bendin’
‘Neath the stompin’ of our hooves,
And our voices started blendin’
Like we was doin’ somethin’ good.

We would howl at night in streets, so loud,
In hopes we could be heard.
Now we’re bitin’ our own bullets,
Now we’re choking on our words.

How the trumpet started blowin’
With no regard to tune,
But our ears were turning deaf
Beneath the silence of the moon.
Now we raise our glasses higher,
And curse the noise we've lost
If we go down still fighting,
We haven't really lost.

Through straining voice
and twisted tongue,
We'll sing the layman's song
“Our labor’s never good enough.
The pain had been too long.”

How the burning rays of summer
Have beat down on our backs,
And we scream out every chorus
In hopes it’s not our last.
We pray our Lord forgives us
For every turn we took.
Though the signs all said forbidden,
Our hearts refused to look.

May the road rise up to meet me
As I stumble o'er my steps,
For I'm far too old to rise for it,
Too far from home to rest.
My callused hands
Can't hold the chords
to carry out the songs,
“Our labor's never good enough.
the pain has been too long.”
